In the afternoon of Sep. 20, 2006, the Regional Director of Asia Region of the Micronutrient Initiative (MI), Mr. Luc Laviolette, called on CNSIC in the company of Ms. Lilian Selenge, a Health Project Officer from UNICEF. Mr. Mao Qingguo, the General Manager of CNSIC, held friendly talks with these two distinguished guests. The meeting began with a comprehensive introduction of the role of Chinese salt industry in the IDD elimination through salt iodization, which included the following topics such as the current status of Chinese Salt Industry, Salt Iodization Project in China, specific measures of salt iodization, current constrains and future plans. Mr. Luc was fully satisfied with the introduction and willing to promote Chinese experience to other countries. He pointed out that MI was ready to assist China to completely tackle the remaining obstacles. Both parties also exchanged information of double-fortified and triple fortified nutrition salt. Mr. Luc expressed great interest in the cooperation with CNSIC to develop triple-fortified nutrition in China, stating that MI could provide information and technical support in this field. Mr. Luc regarded salt as a perfect nutrition vehicle, and he hoped that nutrition-fortified salt could bring more welfare to human beings, especially people in remote and poor areas who can’t afford other expensive nutritious foods. At the end of the meeting, both parties agreed to continue the discussions on the cooperation in the development of triple-fortified nutrition salt through further contacts and communications. |
